THE HEROES of DAE'RUN - Volume 2: DEFENDERS of GRIFFON'S PEAK

Continuing The Heroes of Dae’Run Series with Volume 2

The stalwart city of men takes up the fight against the Bloodcrest Forces in Defenders of Griffon's Peak as the orcs of Dek'Thal build alliances with the worst of mankind...the fearsome assassin's guild and a deadly pack of were-wolves. Ever in opposition, the Protectors of the Vale venture from the Far West to unite with the heroes of the Far East to defy the evil Bloodcrest Forces. Vlaad-the last human defender and champion of Griffon's Peak and his beloved Theila, a warlock of dark magic, leave their home to hunt down the orc leader Gorka Darkstorm and put an end to his evil plans. Cunning assassins lie in wait at every turn, deadly were-wolves prowl through the night, and the worst fears imaginable stand between the heroes and their duty. Vlaad and Theila will need more than skill with a sword and sorcerous might to fight the evil looming before them as shields splinter, blood flies, and magic lights up the sky.

Interview with Curtiss Robinson:

1. When and why did you decide to become a writer?

I have been writing bits and pieces of stories and poetry since high school but it wasn’t until 2007 when I was deployed to Zabul Province, Afghanistan that I started writing seriously.  Fantasy Adventure writing was my escape from a year of hardship where my small team of 12 Americans were charged with training the local militia to fight the Taliban.  Amid the death and sorrow of combat that I saw daily, I found writing about heroes battling villains to be exciting, interesting, and even therapeutic.  You can see the trials we faced in the highs and lows of Protectors of the Vale and Defenders of Griffon’s Peak…My first two books.  They are on amazon.com and easily found on google.

2. Do you have a day job other than writing? If yes, what do you do?
I am a full time Soldier in the Army.  I have 24 years of total service and have begun my retirement.  My last day in uniform was the 4th of May 2014.  I transitioned into civilian life on the 31st of May 2014 when my transitional leave ran out.  It has been an exciting and educational career that has prepared me for my next adventure as a clinical counselor and business owner.  I hope to help Soldiers with PTSD more than anything else but I will be helping families and individuals with a variety of challenges.

3. Which is your favourite genre to write?

I am considered a HIGH FANTASY or EPIC FANTASY writer.  The some popular authors in this genre include JRR Tolkien, RA Salvatore, Troy Denning, Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman.  If you love Lord of the Rings, The Forgotten Realms, the Dark Sun, or Dragonlance then my style is perfect for you.  Protectors of the Vale really follows the style of the authors above.  Defenders of Griffon’s Peak and Guardians of the Mountain have evolved abet into my own style but there is clearly an influence from those who have come before me.  Interestingly enough, this genre has expanded into MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, Neverwinter, and even SCI FI hits like Star Wars the Old Republic.  There is something about swords and magic that compel those who love adventure and when you add dragons, demons, orcs, and other fantastical creatures this genre really draws an amazing crowd.  I love it.

4. Other than your own books, what are your top 3 favourite books?
Wow this is tough.  I would have to give RA Salvatore’s entire Dark Elf Series the highest marks, but Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings is a classic for sure.  As a shameless plug I would say that my favorite book in the Heroes of Dae’run Series is Book 3 Guardians of the Mountain…but I might be a little biased:).

5. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Never ever give up is the only advice that matters.  Sure education and experience is important but if writing is in your blood then you will discover the tools you need to be successful.  I suppose the best advice for aspiring writers, who need a little coaching, is to write because you love it and pay your bills with other work until you make it big.  I have managed to write three books in the Heroes of Dae’run Series while on active duty with the Army, raising 4 kids (with my lovely wife), training MMA fighters and Soldiers in martial arts.  There is time but it is hard to make a living early on so be creative and have back up income whenever possible.

Lastly let me just say that anyone who picks up one of my books is in for a real treat.  My background in martial arts makes the combat very lively and visceral.  My extensive training as a Soldier is evident in the strategy and tactics the character employ.  Last but not least I write from my own life experiences which is the key to writing a real page turner.
